How to Prepare for a Newborn Session in Home or in my Studio

When to schedule a newborn session:

  • Essentially when the baby is born. Send me an email or contact me through my website and we can schedule it. If you are having a scheduled birth or want to schedule around your due date, we can do that as well.

  • Sessions take place during the first 10 days of your baby being born. Let me know as soon as the baby is born or when you are out of the hospital and we can schedule a day.

  • Sessions are scheduled on weekdays since weekends are normally filled up with other sessions.

What to wear:

  • Simple is best. Neutral tones are best that go well together. Having similar tones in your outfits instead of wearing the same colors, will help balance the image. I prefer grays, whites, and all pastel colors. Black will work as well, and every now and then a pop of color is nice, especially around the holidays! I recommend a pop of color for the kids though and keeping the parents in neutrals so the attention will mainly be on the kids.

  • Avoid neon colors. Vibrant, ultra bright and neon colors will reflect on your skin.

  • Choose timeless outfits. Steer clear of logos and shirts with writing as they will distract and pull the eye to those areas.

On the Day of the Session:

  • Try to change and feed the baby right before you leave the house if you are coming to the studio or before I get to your home. A dry and well fed baby will likely fall asleep easier and longer. If you are driving to my studio and it’s longer than a 45 minute drive, you can feed the baby in the studio, I will give you space and privacy, just make sure to let me know so I can plan for that.

  • Don’t worry about putting on fancy outfits for the baby. I find that newborns are best photographed in a simple swaddle.

  • Feel free to use heirlooms and special items if you have them like a special blanket a family member made for the baby and I will photograph them with that item.

  • Parents, expect to be in the photos. This sessions may be called newborn sessions, but they are also a time to capture you and your spouse and siblings with the newest member of the family.

  • My goal is to have your newborn session be relaxing and fun, but sometime newborns have their own plans. If your baby cries, pees or poop, or spits up, even on me…. it’s okay! I’m a mother of twins, I’ve seen it all and nothing phases me… I promise. Your photo session is a time to celebrate your baby and your new family! So enjoy it!
